Emergency Preparedness Week 2025: Be Prepared. Know Your Risks

May 4 to 10 is Emergency Preparedness Week in Canada — a national opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of planning ahead for emergencies.

This year’s theme, “Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.”, encourages all Canadians to understand the hazards that are most likely to affect their communities and take simple steps to stay safe.

In the wake of the recent ice storm, Tay Township residents have seen firsthand how important it is to be ready. Emergency preparedness doesn't have to involve extreme measures — even small steps can make a big difference during a crisis.

Residents are encouraged to follow four basic steps to get prepared:

  • Know the risks — Learn which emergencies are most likely to affect the region.
  • Make a plan — Talk to your household about how to respond in an emergency.
  • Prepare a kit — Stock food, water and essential supplies to last at least 72 hours.
  • Know what to do — Stay informed and follow official instructions during an emergency.

As part of your emergency preparedness plan, residents are reminded that Tay Township maintains an Accessibility and Functional Needs Registry.

The voluntary and confidential registry is designed to support individuals who may require additional assistance during an emergency, such as those with mobility limitations, medical needs or other challenges that could make evacuation or response more difficult.

Public safety responders use the registry to identify and assist residents who may be at higher risk, ensuring they are informed and supported during emergencies.

Residents can register online at tay.ca/AFNR or pick up a paper form at the municipal office, 450 Park St., Victoria Harbour. For assistance, contact Jenny Duffy at 705-534-7248 ext. 262 or jduffy@tay.ca.
