Information on Seasonal Water Taste and Odour
From time to time, municipal water users may notice a slightly earthy or musty taste or smell. This is often caused by geosmin, a natural compound found in lakes and rivers, especially during warmer months.
Geosmin is not harmful. It is also found in foods such as beets and spinach and is what gives the air a fresh scent after it rains.
Why it happens - Geosmin levels can rise when weather, rainfall or lake turnover stir up organic material in the water. Tay Township’s water treatment process includes filtration methods to reduce this effect, but it may still be noticeable at times.
What you can do - Chilling tap water or adding a slice of lemon may help reduce the odour and taste.
If you think the odour or taste may be from something else, please contact the Ontario Clean Water Agency at 1-866-775-7712.
Thank you, Tay Township Operations.
