Up to 7,000 expected at Martyrs’ Shrine for Pilgrimage on Sunday

Tay, Ontario: In partnership with Tay Township, Martyrs’ Shrine is advising residents of Tay and neighbouring municipalities of a large pilgrimage that may cause traffic congestion in the Highway 12 and Ogdens Beach Road area near Port McNicoll on Sunday, August 11.

Martyrs’ Shrine will be hosting an expected 7,000 people participating in the Polish Pilgrimage this weekend. Approximately 1,000 pilgrims will be participating in the Walking Pilgrimage beginning earlier in the week from the Greater Toronto Area and may cause increased pedestrian traffic along rural roadways, and along the Tay Shore Trail, Simcoe County Loop Trail, and Trans-Canada Trail Systems.

The remaining participants in the event will be arriving by car and bus and may cause traffic congestion along Highway 12 and Ogdens Beach Road as they enter Martyr’s Shrine.

Martyr’s Shrine remains open to the public during this weekend’s event.

Martyrs’ Shrine is the National Shrine to the Canadian Martyrs, celebrating its 93rd season, and is a ministry of the Jesuits in English Canada. This ‘house of prayer, home of peace’ honours the Jesuit missionaries and their companions who lived, worked, and died here over 350 years ago. It is located in Tay, Ontario, in the heart of the Huron Confederacy of the 17th century. More than 100,000 visitors from around the world and from all cultural backgrounds are welcomed to the Shrine’s 75-acre landscaped grounds each year.
