Council highlights provide an update of important information discussed at the previous council meeting. Full agendas and minutes are available at tay.ca/calendar
Tay Shore Trail Winter Maintenance
Council recognizes that walking on the Tay Shore Trail is an excellent way for community members to get outdoor exercise, while still following COVID-19 safety protocols from the Province and local health unit. In response to requests from the community, Council has directed staff to maintain a section of the Tay Shore Trail throughout the winter in each of the three shoreline communities that the trail passes through. The sections of trail that will be maintained are:
Port McNicoll: First Ave Trail from Davidson St. to Arpin St.
Victoria Harbour: Bass Bay Dr. to Caswell Rd.
Waubaushene: Pine St. to Coldwater Rd.
Please note that winter trail maintenance will only be for this winter, in response to the pandemic.
Tay Community Rink Closed for the Season:
Council has made the difficult decision to close the Tay Community Rink for the remainder of the season. Council recognizes the importance of outside recreational activities for both physical and mental health, but believes that keeping the rink open would be inconsistent with the Provincial stay-at-home order that is in effect to slow the spread of COVID-19 by limiting opportunities for the congregation of people. We are hopeful that the progress of vaccinations to eliminate the threat of COVID-19 will continue rapidly and look forward to a time when our community members can once again enjoy all the facilities that Tay Township has to offer.
Waubaushene Pines Elementary School:
Tay Township recognizes the need for community spaces and has been looking into viable options for a space of this kind for the Waubaushene community. Most recently, an ad-hoc committee presented a report highlighting the possibility of pursuing the former Waubaushene Pines Elementary School for use as a community space. After much consideration, Council has decided not to pursue the purchase of this property any further, based on the financial costs to renovate the building, and the current condition of the property. The need and passion for a community space in Waubaushene was also highlighted during a delegation from the Waubaushene Action Group (WAG). Council acknowledges the community support for this kind of space, and has directed the ad-hoc committee to review and report back to Council on the recreation needs of the Waubaushene community ahead of proceeding with any further work on selecting or proposing a facility for such use.
