Council to fill Deputy Mayor vacancy by direct appointment

Tay, Ontario: At the January 23 Council meeting, Council observed a moment of silent reflection in tribute to the late Jim Crawford, after formally declaring the Office of Deputy Mayor vacant.

Council considered three options to fill the vacancy—direct appointment, appointment by selection, and a by-election.

“After discussing the merits of each option, Council voted to fill the vacancy by direct appointment,” said Mayor Ted Walker. “We’re pleased to offer the position of Deputy Mayor to Gerard LaChapelle.”

G. LaChapelle was elected as Councillor in ward two for the 2014 to 2018 Council term and a candidate for Deputy Mayor in the 2018 election.

Tay Township will send correspondence to G. LaChapelle requesting a response by February 5. If the appointment is accepted, Council would pass a by-law to appoint him on February 6 and he would be sworn in as Deputy Mayor on February 13.
