If you require transportation to the warming centre, please call 2-1-1 to register for a ride. Pets are welcome. Please bring your own containers for coffee or tea, and charging cables for your devices.
We encourage all residents to be good #TeamTay neighbours and check in on others who may need extra help during this time.
Recreation Program Update
All Township recreation programs, including Active Living classes and facility rentals have resumed as scheduled. Make-up classes have been arranged where possible, and participants have been notified by our Recreation Team.
Road Closures
Several roads remain closed due to fallen trees and hydro hazards. These areas cannot be cleared until Hydro One has safely removed any trees in contact with power lines. Hydro One has been notified.
Current road closures:
- Rumney Road – from Elliot Sideroad to Vasey Road
- Newton Street – from Granny White Sideroad to Hogg Valley Road
- Sandhill Road – from Highway 12 to Fesserton Sideroad
- Hogg Valley Road – from Gervais Road to Newton Street
Please continue to avoid these areas for your safety and that of emergency crews. Residents are advised to stay off all roads unless travel is absolutely necessary due to ongoing clean-up operations.
Tree and Brush Clean-Up
Tay Township is responsible for trees located on Township-owned property only. Property owners are responsible for trees on private property. If a privately owned tree has fallen onto Township property, please contact us at 705-524-7248 x230. Township crews will do their best to remove the portion of the tree that extends onto municipal property. Please note that clean-up will only be completed up to the property line—the remaining portion of the tree remains the responsibility of the property owner.
Crews are currently focused on clearing high-priority sites impacted by the storm and are working at full capacity. Your patience and understanding are appreciated as we continue recovery efforts across the community.
Brush Removal – County of Simcoe
The County of Simcoe also provides curbside brush collection. Brush must be bundled and prepared according to the following guidelines:
- Bundles must be secured with natural twine
- Bundles must not exceed 2 metres in length and 30 cm in diameter
- Individual branches must not be more than 7 cm in diameter and 2 metres in length
- Logs are not accepted at the curb
Brush that does not meet these requirements may be left behind. However, unbundled brush, large branches, and logs can be dropped off at any County Waste Facility with no size limits. From March 31 to April 28, 2025, brush debris will be accepted free of charge. Please note: root balls are not considered brush and will be charged at the standard waste disposal rate.
For full details on waste facility hours and locations, please visit simcoe.ca/waste.
Safety Reminders
Fallen Power Lines
If a tree is tangled in hydro wires, Township crews cannot remove it until Hydro One has made the area safe. Residents should stay at least 10 metres (33 feet) away from any downed power lines, even if they do not appear to be live. To report a downed line, contact Hydro One at 1-800-434-1235.
Generator Safety
Always run generators outdoors and well away from windows, doors and vents to avoid carbon monoxide exposure.
Candle Use
Never leave candles unattended. Keep them away from flammable materials and use battery-powered lighting when possible.
Food Safety
Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible.
- A refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours.
- A full freezer will maintain its temperature for about 48 hours.
Discard perishable items such as meat, dairy and eggs if they have been above 4°C for more than two hours. - Visit the Simcoe Muskoka Health Unit website for more information.
