Wildlife Resources

Tay Township is full of wildlife such as reptiles, fish, birds and mammals. It is very important to observe all wildlife from a safe distance.

If you encounter a problem with wildlife please contact the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. Call them at 1-800-667-1940

If you encounter a bear, call the toll-free Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327.

  • If a bear poses an immediate threat to personal safety by exhibiting threatening or aggressive behaviour, dial 911 or call the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122.

Did You Know?!

  • Unleashed dogs can surprise bears and cause a defensive attack on dogs and their owners.
  • Always keep your dog on a leash.
  • To avoid attracting bears, do not leave dog food outdoors, in screened-in areas or porches.
  • Mother bears with cubs will normally avoid interacting with humans, but if a dog is present this can cause a defensive attack.

The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society offers emergency sheltering to help pet parents when they need it most. For those who can’t return home for one reason or another – perhaps they are fleeing domestic abuse, or suddenly find themselves without a home – the Ontario SPCA can help keep their animals safe as they get back on their feet. Contact the local branch at 705-534-4459.
