Nominations are Open for Simcoe County's Age-Friendly Recognition Awards

The County of Simcoe is proud to announce that nominations are now open for the Age-Friendly Business and Age-Friendly Individual Recognition and Achievement Awards, celebrating those who help create welcoming and accessible communities for older adults.

Nominations are open until August 31, 2025, and winners will be honoured at a special ceremony in the fall.

Age-friendly Business Recognition Awards
Recognizes local businesses and organizations that have taken steps to improve services for older adults. By completing a Self-Assessment Checklist, businesses can evaluate their age-friendliness and access County resources to enhance their services.

Award-winning businesses will receive:

  • Mention in a County press release, social media announcements, and website feature
  • A certificate and window decal
  • A complimentary digital marketing package valued at over $350 (conditions apply)

Customers and clients can also get involved by completing the Customer Nomination Checklist to highlight businesses that make Simcoe County a better place for older adults.

Age-Friendly Individual Recognition and Achievement Awards
This award honours exceptional individuals of all ages who have demonstrated leadership, kindness, and a commitment to supporting older adults.

Categories include:

  • Individual Champion: Advocates for older adults, enriching their lives through leadership and dedication.
  • Older Adult Champion: Recognizes older adults (60+) for their selfless service and commitment to volunteerism.
  • Youth ChampionNew this year, celebrates young individuals who have made a meaningful impact on older adults through service and education.

About the Simcoe County Age-Friendly Community Program
The Age-Friendly Community Program was established in 2016 to increase awareness of the County’s aging population and help businesses and organizations evaluate their environment and service delivery. The County continues to provide resources and assessment tools to help organizations implement age-friendly goals and strategies and adapt to our aging population. Accessibility and Functional Needs Registry

Do you or a loved one have medical, access, or functional needs that would place you at higher risk during an emergency event? It is important to plan ahead for disasters as resources can be very limited during an emergency. If you are on oxygen, have a physical disability that would make it difficult to evacuate or have other medical needs, you are strongly encouraged to fill out the Tay Township Accessibility and Functional Needs Registry as part of your Emergency Preparedness Plan.

Participating in the Accessibility and Functional Needs Registry is completely voluntary. Information submitted is strictly confidential and will only be used in the event of an emergency. The online form is available at tay.ca/AFNR or available for pick-up at the Municipal Office located at 450 Park Street, Victoria Harbour during our regular business hours of Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Ontario Senior Dental Program

  • Dental for seniors over the age of 65, there is an income threshold of $22,200 for a single and $37,100 for a couple both age 65 or older. 

Askennonia

  • Membership subsidies as well as subsidized transportation to programming.

Georgian Bay Food Network

  • Midland's newest foodbank. An inclusive, unique, self-serve model for providing food to people who need it. The model is founded on dignity, respect, and human warmth.
  • See what Active Living Programs are available through the Township of Tay Parks, Recreation and Facility Services
  • The Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) is leading in-person 45 minute exercise classes. Check out tay.ca/events for the upcoming classes. In addition, some other VON resources are:

    • Healthy Aging Education series (virtual & in-person)

County Opens 2024 Age-Friendly Seniors Housing Grant Program

​​​​​​​​​​Accessible, Ada​ptable and Inclusive Designs fo​r Occupants 60+​ The 2024 Age-Friendly Seniors Housing Grant Application deadline for submissions is March 31, 2024. (Please note this grant has closed for 2024). 

The Ontario Government has a new interactive website Ontario.ca/seniors. This website makes it easier for seniors to find the information they need to connect to services and resources.  

Seniors can now easily find out how to connect to services like Health811, renew a driver’s license, and find tax credits. Seniors can also find other community resources including local senior organizations that offer social, cultural and recreational programs. 

The fastest-growing demographic is seniors. The number of seniors aged 65 and over is projected to increase significantly, from 2.8 million 2022, to 4.4 million by 2046. 

 

Simcoe County LINX is a public transit system that links major urban hubs and local transit services in the County of Simcoe. The LINX transit system provides citizens and visitors reliable and courteous transit in clean, safe vehicles equipped with features to make them fully accessible.

VON Simcoe County Invites you to join the SMART Program (Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together) ®

Port McNicoll Community Centre - Tuesday's and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m.

Oakwood Community Centre - Thursday's at 10:00 a.m

  • 45 minute low impact gentle exercise program specifically designed for adults 55+ to help build muscle strength, balance, endurance, flexibility and mobility
  • This program is offered FREE of charge

Please bring:

✓ Good, supportive shoes to wear (running shoes preferred) ✓ Water bottle

✓ Exercise band (also available to purchase on site)
